The Defensoría K’iche’s central focus is the promotion and use of indigenous Mayan law to address community conflicts. It is a small office led by two well-respected Mayan elders who have long championed the right to use their own laws and addressed human rights violations against their communities. Some of the worst atrocities during the 36-year civil war were committed in Quiché, and for that reason the healing process is really just getting under way. To provide a full array of services to the K’iche’ migrant population, the Defensoría has teamed up with María Cristina Chay Medrano, one of the few Maya K’iche’ women attorneys, in order to join the Defender Network.
